Features
Private Schools
Private boarding schools in the USA offer a unique educational experience where students live and study on campus, often in a more structured and supportive environment. These schools are known for their rigorous academic programs, diverse extracurricular activities, and strong emphasis on personal development. Boarding schools typically serve students from middle to high school levels (grades 6-12) and often offer a college-preparatory curriculum (grade 13)
Sports Academies
Boarding sports academies in the USA provide a unique blend of high-level athletic training and academic education, designed for student-athletes who aspire to compete at the collegiate or professional level. Most sports academies offer both high school and post-graduate athletic programs, with multiple teams organized within each program to accommodate various skill levels and development stages.
Junior Colleges
Junior colleges (often referred to as community colleges) offer two-year academic programs, leading to associate degrees or certificates. Junior colleges also offer robust athletic programs, competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). These programs provide student-athletes with the opportunity to continue competing at a high level while completing their academics.
NCAA Universities
The NCAA is divided into three divisions (D1, D2, and D3), each offering varying levels of athletic scholarships and competition. D1 schools are typically larger universities with highly competitive athletic programs, while D2 schools balance athletics and academics, and D3 schools focus more on the student-athlete experience with no athletic scholarships.
NAIA Universities
The NAIA includes smaller colleges and universities with competitive athletic programs. It offers athletic scholarships similar to NCAA D2 schools, with a focus on student-athlete development both on and off the field. NAIA programs emphasize a balance between athletics, academics, and community involvement.

Academic
Scholarships
An academic scholarship is a financial award given to students based on their academic achievements, such as high GPA, standardized test scores (SAT/ACT), and extracurricular involvement. These scholarships are offered by both high schools and universities in the U.S. and are designed to help students fund their education by reducing tuition costs.
Athletic
Scholarships
Athletic scholarships are financial awards given to student-athletes based on their athletic performance and potential, and can be either full or partial. These scholarships help cover the costs of tuition, housing, and other educational expenses. The amount awarded depends on the recruiting needs of the school’s athletic program and the academic standards met by the athlete.
Understanding
Visa Requirement
Most international student-athletes need an F-1 Student Visa to study in the U.S. The I-20 document provided by the school is crucial for this process. Key Tip – Start your visa process early and ensure your paperwork (I-20, passport) is in order before applying for the F-1 visa.
F-1
Student-Visa
The F-1 Student Visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows foreign students to enter the United States for the purpose of full-time academic studies at accredited institutions, including high schools, colleges, universities, or language programs.
I-20
Document
The I-20 is an official document issued by a U.S. school to international students who are accepted into a full-time study program. It is essential for applying for an F-1 Student Visa and for maintaining legal student status in the United States.
Health
Insurance
International student-athletes are required to have health insurance that covers injuries, including those sustained during sports. Many schools offer plans tailored to international students. Key Tip: Check if your school provides health insurance or if you need to purchase a separate plan.
Building Relationships with Coaches and Teammates
Developing good communication and a positive attitude is essential for success both on and off the field. Key Tip: Be open to learning from coaches and building camaraderie with teammates to enhance your overall experience.
Maintaining Academic Performance
To retain eligibility and scholarships, student-athletes must maintain certain academic standards. Balancing studies and training is crucial. Key Tip: Prioritize time management and seek academic help if needed.
